There are dozens of them! Yes ladies, there are many types of accessories to adorn your hair. However, when it comes to choosing the hair accessory for your wedding or a special occasion, you don't want to regret your choice. In this article, we present your different options, explain what type of hairstyle they are made for and tell you about the advantages and disadvantages of each. If you already have an idea of a hairstyle, this information will be very useful to you when choosing your hair jewelry!

THE FAMOUS HAIRBRUSH

The comb has passed through countless generations. Since the era of our grandmothers, the hair comb has always accompanied the elegance of women styling their hair to complement their beautiful outfits. Even today, it is an extremely versatile accessory that adapts very easily to a wide range of wedding hairstyles. That is why it is among the most commonly used for your wedding ceremonies.

The hair comb is a rigid, most often metal structure with thin, tightly spaced tines that will ensure proper placement and secure stabilization of the comb in your hair.

Comb size plays an important role. It is what will determine the use and positioning of the comb. A long comb will often be placed at the back of the head, on a low bun, for example. Since a large comb is a bit heavier, it needs a good amount of hair to stay securely in place on the hairstyle, which is why a bun is the ideal hairstyle. Medium or small combs can be placed on the side, behind the ear, at the back of the head in a ponytail, or on a bun.

A major benefit of the comb is that it is very easy to place and comfortable to wear. However, we recommend considering its weight and length to determine if it will suit your desired hairstyle.

2. HAIR PICKS OR BOBBY PINS

The particularity of this hair accessory is its U-shaped metal shape. Hair pins or sometimes called bun pins are often smaller hair jewelry, compared to combs, which offer great freedom when styling them. Their size and shape allow the pieces to be placed separately or next to each other. These accessories are most often used to adorn a bun, braids or ponytails. If they were fashionable in our grandmothers' time for their elegant buns, we find them being increasingly used to accessorize loose hair with twisted locks or half-tails nowadays.

A great advantage of these hair accessories is their lightness and small size which makes them very comfortable and versatile. However, it is important to take into account the length of the spikes because on a hairstyle with little volume, the bottom of the spikes could appear.

3. HEADBANDS, HAIR BANDS AND CROWNS

Rigid headband, bandeau, headband, hair crown, what's the difference? These terms seem to refer to very similar accessories. We’ll explain the subtle difference.

A rigid headband is that rigid structure that wraps around the head but remains open. On the other hand, a bandeau, also called a headband in English, is flexible and has an elastic band that allows it to fit all head sizes.A hair crown is a type of headband that features raised decorative ornaments and is therefore generally more substantial. Rigid headbands are often flat, while a hair crown has a raised, dimensional structure.

Now that we’ve clarified the differences, let’s talk about hairstyles! All three categories of accessories work with most hairstyles. Whether it’s a bandeau, a rigid headband, or a hair crown, this accessory will perfectly complement a bun, ponytail, half ponytail, or loose hair. A unique feature of the bandeau or headband is that it tames your hair to cover the elastic by wrapping strands around it. This is what’s called a covered or half-covered bandeau.

These hair accessories are very practical and easy to put on. That said, keep in mind that the metal frames of rigid headbands or hair crowns can be tight and sometimes become uncomfortable over the course of several hours.

4. THE VINEYARDS

The name of this hair accessory may come up less often in descriptions of bridal hairstyles, but that doesn't mean it isn't used! Hair vines are very adaptable accessories and that's why they are so popular.

To describe it, this hair accessory is characterized by its malleability. It is often made using metal wires to which flowers, pearls or crystals are embellished. There are two types of hair vines: those that attach to your hairstyle using clips and those that have small combs at the ends. This type of hair jewelry is designed to adapt to all hairstyles, to adorn your head or your buns as you wish.

Because of its malleability, the hair vine can be worn on your head as a headband or crown or placed on your bun at the back or side of your head. It gives you a lot of different hairstyle options to proudly and elegantly display on your wedding day!

5. THE BARRETTES

The barrette is the most practical and most used hair accessory in everyday life. This modern hair accessory is worn by little girls, elegant ladies and young ladies alike. It is a very feminine accessory that does not require much effort to give a simple hairstyle a refined touch.

There are several types of barrettes. The support and closure system of the barrette can determine its function on a hairstyle. At Atelier Lilac we mainly work with two types of barrettes, the clip barrette and the snap barrette. Clip barrettes are often small or medium-sized jewels to be placed on one side of the hairstyle or behind to style a half-ponytail with fine strands. The snap barrette, the one that must be opened with the index finger and thumb, will allow you to style larger strands of hair, most often at the back of the head.

The advantage of the barrette is that it is a trendy accessory that you can wear on a special occasion such as your religious or civil wedding as well as for your daily outings. It will thus become an accessory and head jewelry in your wardrobe in its own right!
